The predominant attribute in photography is not just resolution but also color depth. This color depth is why Kodak and other film manufactures provided the large varity of films in the past, from pan-x to tri-x in b/w, from Kodacrome to Ektacromes slide film, and the negitive color films of veracolor with several color temperatures and speeds. |

Both images to the right were adjusted for the same white balance in photoshop for color, notice the texture of the black metal in the lower image showing the details and the true color of the gold color consistent in the lower image.
The Medium Format DSLR provides a highest bits per pixel. The best DSLR in 35mm format is 14bits per color (Red,Blue and Green) RAW data. The Medium Format DSLR provides 16bits per color (Red,Blue and Green) yielding 65535 per color or 2.8xE14 possible colors while the 14bit per color yields at best 4.4xE12 colors. These numbers seem large although most images are captured in JPG format that only holds 8bits per color that yields 1.6xE7 colors.
Black and White: JPG images are 8bits while the TIFF files from a medium format DSLR provides 16bits. to explain closer 8bit gives you 255 shades of gray while the 16bits yields you 65536 shades of gray. Even the best DSLR in 35mm format can only get to 16384 shades of gray in TIF format |
